87. Shakespeare and Company

Experience:

Though we had visited Paris many times before, this was our first visit to this legendary independent bookstore - Shakespeare and Company. Showing up on a rainy day, we had to wait in line, but once inside, we were able to move around freely. It's in a wonderful older building with exposed beams and tiled floors, providing an old world charm. Meandering passages and a wall covered with classic photos of famous authors, leads to a quiet second floor reading area. This floor has comfortable furniture for readers and a collection of typewriters from famous writers. Exploring the shop you come upon different genres - Art, Music, Mystery, etc., with both old and new collections. There's also a separate children's room full of books for toddlers to teens.

Most books are in English, but French ones are also available. The outside bookstands feature used books and the adjacent cafe was a nice place to finish our visit. This quote is from the owner, George Whitman, who opened the shop in 1951:

"I created this bookstore like a man would write a novel, building each room like a chapter, and I like people to open the door the way they open a book that leads into a magic world in their imaginations."

Picture taking inside is not permitted, although they sell postcards of the interiors along with other shop merchandise.
